How is OSA diagnosed? Is it “just” snoring?
A polysomnography (PSG) is a sleep study used to diagnose a variety of sleep disorders, including OSA. PSGs are usually performed in a sleep clinic, although they may be conducted in a hospital or in the home. A polysomnogram is the best way to evaluate your sleep and understand the extent of the sleep disorder.
How is OSA treated?
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard of OSA treatment. CPAPs act as a pressurized air splint to keep the airway open to prevent apneas and or related respiratory disturbances. This pressure is prescribed according to the clinician’s evaluation of the patient’s sleep apnea. Because CPAP is a medical device, all CPAP systems must be cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). CPAP systems and interfaces are sold by prescription only.
